Few views of wartime Japan are as direct as this aerial look at the Kawasaki Petroleum Center in Akashi, a port city on the Inland Sea west of Kobe. Taken in 1945, the photograph records bomb damage to a fuel storage site at a time when oil was among the most sought-after targets for American forces, since Japan's shrinking petroleum supplies were badly limiting its military and industry. Aerial photographs like this one were used to assess what had been destroyed, and today they offer an overhead record of how the air war reached ordinary industrial towns.
