Castle Gate, Utah, was a coal mining camp in Carbon County, set in a narrow canyon cut by the Price River and named for the sandstone cliffs that rise above it. In 1913 the town depended almost entirely on the coal mines worked by the Utah Fuel Company, and the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad carried the coal out of the canyon. The mine workforce drew heavily on immigrant laborers from southern and eastern Europe, so the camp's streets, boarding houses, and churches reflected many languages and customs at once. Residents of the region knew Castle Gate chiefly as a working coal town, where daily life followed the whistle, the shift, and the price of coal in distant markets.
