Moroni, in Sanpete County, Utah, was a small farming town in 1913, nearly fifty years after Latter-day Saint settlers founded it in the late 1850s and named it for a prophet in the Book of Mormon. The valley's economy rested on irrigated fields of grain and alfalfa, orchards, dairying, and sheep raised on the surrounding benchland. Many residents traced their families to Scandinavian converts who had arrived in the valley in the decades after settlement, so Danish and Swedish names and church traditions were common in town. Life centered on the ward meetinghouse, the schools, and the farm calendar of planting, haying, and harvest. Utah had been a state for only about seventeen years, and rural towns like Moroni were still building the roads and local institutions that tied them to larger markets.
