South Temple Street in Salt Lake City, photographed in 1913, ran along the south edge of Temple Square, the grounds at the heart of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By then the city was a rail and mining center, with lines serving the Wasatch Front and copper and ore moving from the mountains to smelters in the valley. Its residents were still living alongside the Mormon past, since Brigham Young's Beehive House stood on this same street, a reminder of the settlers who had arrived in the 1840s and 1850s. Salt Lake City in 1913 was growing quickly, with new houses, streetcars, and commercial blocks spreading out from the old downtown, and the street was the everyday route for church members, merchants, and office workers moving between the city's religious and commercial centers.
