Salt Lake City in 1912 was the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Temple Square, the walled grounds at its center, had served as the church's gathering place since the pioneers arrived in 1847. The Salt Lake Temple, begun in 1853, took four decades to finish and was dedicated in 1893, so its granite towers were the city's best-known landmark. Railroads tied the valley to eastern markets, while mining and smelting in the nearby mountains, especially copper, drew workers and new residents to the Wasatch Front. Residents knew the grounds for the Tabernacle and its great organ, and for the steady stream of visitors who came to see the temple.
