Nephi, the seat of Juab County in central Utah, sat in the Juab Valley at the foot of the Wasatch Range in 1910. The town had been settled by Latter-day Saints in the 1850s, and by the early twentieth century its economy rested on irrigated farming, with alfalfa, grain, sugar beets, and livestock moving out along the Denver and Rio Grande Western line that served the region. Nearby mining camps in the Tintic and Levan areas drew workers and supplies through the valley, and the rail connection tied local merchants to larger markets. Residents of the era would have known Nephi as a quiet agricultural community where church meeting houses, schools, and irrigation ditches shaped daily life.
