Utah's copper works in 1910 sat at the center of one of the state's largest industries, with ore from the Bingham Canyon district in the Oquirrh Mountains feeding concentrators and smelters that turned rock into metal for the national market. Utah had been a state only since 1896, and the copper towns that grew up around these plants drew miners and laborers from southern and eastern Europe, Greece, Japan, and Mexico, creating crowded, multilingual communities. Work in and around the mills was hot, dusty, and dangerous, and fumes from the smelting process were a constant concern for the people who lived downwind. Many residents would have known the district less by its name than by the smoke, the whistles marking shift changes, and the steady rumble of ore trains coming down the valley.
