Bingham Canyon, southwest of Salt Lake City, was the center of Utah's copper boom in 1909. The Utah Copper Company had turned the canyon into a large open-pit operation, where steam shovels and rail cars hauled ore down terraced benches to concentrators and smelters. Miners in the camp included many immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, and the town's churches, lodges and boarding houses reflected that mix. Copper prices had fallen during the financial panic of 1907 but were recovering by this time, and the mine's output helped make Utah one of the leading copper-producing states. A photograph of the workings would have shown residents the scale of an enterprise that already defined the local economy.
