Upper Bingham, Utah, in 1909 sat wedged into the steep walls of Bingham Canyon in the Oquirrh Mountains, southwest of Salt Lake City, where the town existed almost entirely for copper. The Utah Copper Company was working its enormous open-pit mine above the settlement, and the shift to large-scale steam shovel mining had made the district one of the most productive copper sources in the country. Its population was drawn from many places, including Italy, Greece, Austria-Hungary, Japan, and Mexico, as well as the older Cornish and Welsh mining families, and the crowded hillside streets reflected that mix of boardinghouses, churches, and fraternal halls. Because the ground allowed little flat space, houses climbed the slopes in tiers, and the mine's ever-widening pit pressed steadily against the town.
