Yampa, Utah, in 1909 sat in a state whose economy still leaned heavily on metals pulled from the ground. Smelters like this one turned raw ore of copper, lead, silver, and gold into metal that could be shipped by rail to markets far away, and Utah's mining districts had fed a steady run of such plants since the 1870s. The work drew laborers, many of them immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, and it shaped the towns that grew up around the furnaces, with company housing, smoke-darkened skies, and shift whistles marking the day. Utah had been a state only since 1896, and its mining towns were still building schools, churches, and local governments of their own. Smelting meant employment and payroll, but it also meant fumes, accidents, and labor disputes that residents would have known well.
