Highland Boy, a copper mining community in the Oquirrh Mountains southwest of Salt Lake City, was part of the Bingham district in 1909, when copper was the main source of wealth in Utah. Ore from the Bingham open pits and underground workings fed concentrators and smelters in the region, and rail lines carried the metal out to market. The mines drew a large and varied workforce, including many immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, Greece, Japan, and Mexico, who lived in company housing and boarding houses near the workings. Life in these camps revolved around shifts, company stores, churches, and fraternal lodges, and labor disputes over wages and safety were common in the years before 1910. Residents in 1909 knew the place chiefly as a mining camp whose fortunes rose and fell with the price of copper.
