Bingham Canyon, about 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, was in 1909 one of the largest copper-producing camps in the world. The Utah Copper Company, backed by the Guggenheim interests, ran open-pit and underground operations there, and its smelters and concentrators drew a steady flow of Finnish, Italian, Greek, Slavic, and Japanese miners to a town wedged into a steep, narrow gorge. The Bingham & Garfield Railway hauled ore down the canyon, and the town's population had climbed past several thousand as mining expanded. Families lived in terraced rows and boardinghouses above the workings, and the district's labor history, including the 1912 strike, lay just ahead.
