West Gunnison, in the Sanpete Valley of central Utah, was a farming community in 1910, roughly half a century after Latter-day Saint settlers first established the town of Gunnison in 1859. The valley's economy rested on irrigated fields of grain and alfalfa watered by streams that ran down from the surrounding mountains, along with the sheep and cattle raised on the open range. Families here measured the year by planting, haying, and harvest, and their livelihoods depended on water rights that local farmers shared and argued over. Utah had been a state for only about fourteen years by 1910, so the region's ties to the wider state government and to the church's local wards still shaped daily civic life. The valley's open fields and scattered farmsteads in this view show the agricultural landscape that sustained the town at the time.
