East Gunnison Valley, in Sanpete County in central Utah, was in 1910 a farming district of irrigated fields, orchards, and hay meadows worked by families whose settlement in the region reached back to the late 1850s. Its economy rested on grain, alfalfa, fruit, and especially livestock, with wool, cattle, and sheep moving out to market by wagon and rail. The nearby town of Gunnison took its name from John Williams Gunnison, an army surveyor killed in 1853 in an attack by Pahvant Utes near the Sevier River. Residents would have known the valley for its church-centered village life, its schools and ward meetinghouses, and for the water rights that decided who could plant in a dry year.
