Salt Lake City in 1913 was a city of about 90,000 people, growing fast as automobiles began to share its streets with streetcars and horse-drawn wagons. The Hotel Utah had opened near Temple Square in 1911, giving visiting businessmen and tourists a modern hotel just a few blocks from the church's headquarters, while the new Union Station depot served the railroads that carried passengers and freight in and out of the valley. Many residents worked in the mining, smelting and wholesale trades that tied the city to distant metal and commodity markets. Church and commerce still shaped daily life, but by 1913 the city was increasingly defined by its electric lines, its office buildings and its growing middle class.
