Salt Lake City in 1907 was a Latter-day Saint capital that was also becoming a center of copper money. Ore from the Bingham Canyon mines, southwest of town, was hauled to new smelters, and the Garfield smelter on the lake shore, opened in 1906, drew workers and their families to a company town near the water. Utah had entered the Union as a state in 1896, so the city now chose its own governors and legislators, although the church still shaped politics and much of daily life. On summer days residents rode out to Saltair, the large pavilion built on pilings over the Great Salt Lake in 1893, or to Lagoon, the resort north of town. Many would have known the city as a copper-smelting center whose fortunes rose and fell with metal prices in distant markets.
