Salt Lake City in 1911 was a railroad and mining supply center at the foot of the Wasatch Range, shaped by the Mormon settlement laid out on a grid by Brigham Young's followers beginning in 1847. The city's economy leaned on the rail lines that crossed the valley, on smelting and mining from the nearby Oquirrh Mountains, and on wholesale trade serving farms and small towns across Utah and southern Idaho. Its population had grown steadily since the transcontinental railroad reached Utah in 1869, and by 1911 it counted well over 90,000 residents. From Ensign Peak, a viewer could see the orderly blocks of the downtown, the domes and spires of the Latter-day Saints' temple district, and the Great Salt Lake glinting to the west.
