Salt Lake City in 1908 was a growing city of electric streetcars, mining money and church authority, with Joseph F. Smith presiding over the Latter-day Saints as the faith adjusted to life under federal and state law. The population had risen considerably during the first decade of the new century, drawing clerks, machinists and laborers to new houses on the benches above the valley floor. Streetcars carried shoppers and workers along the main avenues, while ore from the mountain mining districts supported the banks and wholesale houses downtown. Residents would have known their city as a place where the church's older discipline and a fast-changing commercial life existed side by side.
