In 1908, Lake Cliff was a residential district on the southwest edge of Dallas, reached by streetcar and set around a small artificial lake. Dallas was then a rail and cotton-trading city of roughly 90,000 people, and it had absorbed the neighboring town of Oak Cliff in 1903, bringing its streetcar lines and new houses under one city government. Residents of the period knew the area for its lakeside park and summer outings, which offered an escape from the dust and commerce of downtown. The panorama captures a community still taking shape, where open lots, new homes, and the water's edge were only a short ride from the wholesale houses and depots of the city's center.
