Marble Falls, in Burnet County on the Colorado River in the Texas Hill Country, was a small town in 1908, and the falls that gave it its name were its most visible feature. The river's stone ledges and rapids made the spot useful for milling and power, and the surrounding limestone and marble deposits drew quarry interest. Ranching, farming, and freight hauling tied the town to the region's dirt roads and to rail connections that had made the area easier to reach than it had been a generation earlier. Residents in 1908 would have known the place first as a river crossing and a local market center, with the falls serving as both a working site and a favorite place for picnics and outings.
