Dallas, Texas, in 1908 was a growing rail and cotton-trading city, and its State Fair was among the largest annual gatherings in the state. The fair had been held in Dallas since the 1880s, and by the early 1900s it occupied the grounds that became Fair Park on the city's east side. Farmers, merchants, and visitors arriving by train came to see livestock, farm machinery, agricultural exhibits, and the midway. For many Texans the fair was a yearly event that marked the close of the harvest season and showed off the state's farms and expanding towns.
