Marble Falls, in Burnet County on the Colorado River in the Texas Hill Country, was a small railroad town in 1908, built around the rapids that gave it its name. The Austin and Northwestern line had reached the town in the 1890s, carrying stone from the surrounding hills and farm goods from the valley to markets downriver. Granite from nearby Granite Mountain had supplied stone for the Texas State Capitol in Austin a generation earlier, and quarrying remained a key source of work. Ranching and farming shaped daily life along the river, and residents would have known the town as a rail stop and a gateway to the surrounding hills and water.
