Dallas in 1915 was a cotton, banking, and railroad city that had grown to around 90,000 people by the 1910 census, and its wholesale trade drew business from across North Texas. The State Fair of Texas, held each autumn at Fair Park southeast of downtown, was one of the largest annual gatherings in the state and a point of civic pride. Troops tournaments, with mounted contests of riding and horsemanship, drew large crowds partly because cavalry and National Guard units were training against a backdrop of unrest along the Mexican border, where the Mexican Revolution had spilled into raids and fears of invasion. For Dallas residents, the fairgrounds showed the city's agricultural wealth, its rail links, and its military traditions in one place.
