Dallas in 1909 was a fast-growing railroad and cotton-trading city of roughly 90,000 people, with several rail lines converging downtown and wholesale houses supplying the surrounding farm country. Civic pride ran high, and the State Fair of Texas, held at its Fair Park grounds on the city's east side, drew crowds from across the state each autumn. Military displays, drills, and mock contests were a popular part of such fairs, giving townspeople a chance to watch disciplined companies of soldiers and militia perform before the grandstands. The tournament shown here reflects that mix of martial show and public entertainment that Texans of the period expected from a major event. For residents, Dallas was becoming the commercial capital of North Texas, and its fairgrounds and parade grounds were where the city displayed its growth to visitors.
