Houston in 1909 was a rail and cotton city that had grown fast since its founding in 1836. Its position on Buffalo Bayou, reached by a ship channel that let ocean-going vessels come up from Galveston Bay, made it a shipping point for cotton, lumber, and rice, and several railroads converged there. The city was still working out its civic life under a mayor-council government, with streetcar lines, paved downtown streets, and a growing population of merchants, dock workers, and oil-field investors arriving as the Texas economy expanded. Residents of the time would have known Houston as the commercial center of the Gulf Coast, a place where the bayou trade and the rail yards set the pace of daily life.
