In 1909 Galveston was a Gulf port that had turned much of its energy toward commerce and civic building. Its wharves and docks handled ships carrying cotton and other freight, and the island's merchant families had grown wealthy from that trade. The Rosenberg Library opened in 1904 on a bequest from the merchant Henry Rosenberg, giving the city a public reading room that residents took pride in. Along the island's avenues, large Victorian houses built in the boom years of the 1880s and 1890s still lined the streets, and many Galvestonians regarded their town as the most cosmopolitan city on the Texas coast.
