Oak Cliff, a bluff-top residential district south of the Trinity River, shows Dallas in 1912, a city that had grown quickly on cotton, wholesale trade, and its web of rail lines. Oak Cliff had been incorporated as its own town before Dallas annexed it in 1903, and by the 1910s it was a streetcar suburb where families could live away from the downtown business district while commuting to jobs there. Streetcar lines and new bridges across the river tied the outlying neighborhoods to the city center, and the Houston Street Viaduct, completed in 1912, was meant to make that connection easier. Dallas residents of the period knew their city as a regional commercial center in North Texas, where growth, rail traffic, and land speculation shaped everyday life.
