Bay City, Texas, photographed in late November 1912, sat on the Colorado River in Matagorda County, a flat coastal prairie where farming was reshaping the land. Rice and cotton were the main crops, and the irrigation canals and rice mills that came with the rice boom were drawing new settlers and capital to the Gulf Coast. The town's fortunes depended on the railroad that carried its harvests to market and on the bay ports nearby. The picture was taken only two days before Thanksgiving, so the street and the people in it would have been preparing for the holiday, a reminder of how closely town life followed the farming calendar.
