Houston, Texas, in 1912 was a railroad and cotton town of roughly 80,000 people, and its warehouses and compresses handled cotton moving to mills and export markets. Lumber, rice, and the oil that had surged out of Spindletop in 1901 also fed a commercial economy that had grown well beyond its bayou origins. The Houston Ship Channel was still under construction, and the city's leaders were working to make it an inland port reachable by ocean vessels. That same year the Rice Institute prepared to open as a new university, funded by the estate of William Marsh Rice. Downtown streets, lined with wholesale houses and streetcar tracks, were the center of a region that depended on the cotton trade.
