Dallas in 1912 was a fast-growing cotton and railroad city of roughly 90,000 people, and the Oak Cliff Viaduct, completed that year, improved its link to Oak Cliff, a separate town until Dallas annexed it in 1903. Before the span, residents of Oak Cliff had to cross the low Trinity River bottoms, which flooded easily, to reach downtown banks, wholesale houses and shops. The new concrete structure carried traffic over the floodplain, making it easier for workers and shoppers to travel between home and office. Johnson & Rogers, a Dallas photography firm, recorded the bridge as the city's commercial core reached across the water toward its newer residential districts.
