Dallas in 1912 was a fast-growing cotton and commerce center on the Trinity River, and its downtown was rising quickly after a series of earlier fires had cleared many older wooden blocks. The city had become a major rail junction, with lines radiating outward that moved cotton, livestock, and wholesale goods, and the Texas State Fair drew large crowds to the State Fair grounds each fall. Local business leaders promoted Dallas as the commercial heart of North Texas, and new office buildings, hotels, and banks gave the skyline its growing profile. Residents of the time would have recognized the view as a sign of a city that had grown from a small prairie town within a few decades.
