Ogden, Utah, in 1914 was a railroad town at the junction of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific lines, where the Ogden rail yards and shops employed large numbers of machinists, carmen, and clerks. Its position at the mouth of Ogden Canyon, where the Weber River meets the Wasatch Front, had made it a shipping and supply center for the region's farms, orchards, and coal and mineral districts. The city had grown steadily since the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, and by the 1910s its streets carried streetcars, a growing number of automobiles, and a busy commercial downtown along Twenty-Fifth Street. Mormon church wards, union halls, and fraternal lodges shaped daily civic life, and residents would have known Ogden as the gateway between the Great Salt Lake and the mountains beyond.
