Winchester, Virginia, is the apple country of the northern Shenandoah Valley, and this glass negative captures the orchards in full bloom at the start of May 1926. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that produced a large body of views of American towns and landscapes in the 1920s and 1930s, made the exposure, and the title's bracketed date suggests the company's own record of when it was taken. Blooming orchards were a familiar sight in the valley each spring and a source of regional pride. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
