Among the glass negatives of the National Photo Company, this one stands apart for its subject: the homecoming of soldiers and sailors from the District of Columbia. The company worked in Washington through the 1910s and 1920s, and the title points to a public welcome for local servicemen, a common occasion in the years around the First World War. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coating, which are part of its physical history.
