The sitter is identified only by the name Herbert E. French, a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, though the Library of Congress has not verified it. The negative belongs to the company's large body of work made in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, when its photographers recorded local residents, officials, and public life for a busy commercial trade. Dated loosely between 1912 and 1930, it reached the Library as a gift from a Herbert A. French in 1947. The surviving negative shows signs of age, including streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its coating.
