This glass negative records Herbert Putnam, the Librarian of Congress, on February 28, 1924, according to the date recorded with the negative. Putnam led the Library from 1899 until 1939, a period in which the institution grew substantially and modernized its collections and services. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of government officials and local figures. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes across the image, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coating on the glass.
