Welbourne was the country home of Col. Richard H. Dulaney, a Virginia estate in the rolling hunt country around Middleburg, and this glass negative shows the house as it looked around 1920. The National Photo Company, which made the picture, worked across the eastern United States in the early twentieth century, recording private homes, public buildings and scenic places for sale as souvenir views and printed reproductions. Its large glass-plate negatives, usually sized 8 by 10 inches or smaller, are valued today for their sharp detail and for the record they keep of buildings and landscapes as they stood in that period.
