The record places this glass negative in Washington on December 16, 1924, when Postmaster General Harry S. New presented a $1,000 reward to Richard Breader for an invention. Such an award went to a government employee whose idea had value to the postal service, and the ceremony was the kind of official occasion the National Photo Company often recorded in the capital. The company, active in Washington from about 1906 to 1936, produced a large body of news and portrait photographs, so this picture belongs to a documentary record of the city's public life. Its glass base also shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age, which are part of the object's history.
