Frank Kern and his wife posed for this group portrait with Bobbie, a trained dog, in a glass dry plate negative measuring 8 by 10 inches, made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which catalogued the image as no. 043275, produced large numbers of photographs of people, towns and landscapes during these years, and its large-format negatives captured a good deal of fine detail. Animals were a less typical subject than scenery in commercial catalogs, so Bobbie's presence gives the picture a more personal character. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
