The title, "Search the scriptures," comes from John 5:39 and points to a devotional theme, while the lithograph itself was issued under Nathaniel Currier's name alone, before his partnership with James Ives began in 1857. Currier's firm in New York produced hand-colored prints like this one in large runs, selling them cheaply to families and churchgoers who wanted religious and moral images for the home. Because the record gives only a date range, the exact occasion for the print is unrecorded, but its pairing of a scriptural quotation with a pictorial scene reflects the taste of mid-nineteenth-century American households.
