The bilingual title, "San Pedro recibiendo las llaves," sets this hand-colored lithograph apart from many religious prints of its time, since it was clearly aimed at Spanish-speaking buyers as well as English-speaking ones. It depicts the scene from the Gospel of Matthew in which Christ gives Saint Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, a moment that has long symbolized Peter's authority in the Church. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it, produced inexpensive prints for a wide public from the 1850s into the early twentieth century, and this one is catalogued in a standard reference of the firm's output.
