The title points to the old belief, drawn from Acts 5:15, that the shadow of Saint Peter could heal the sick as he passed through the streets of Jerusalem. That belief gave the apostle's tomb in Rome a special pull for pilgrims. Tradition holds that Peter was buried on the Vatican hill, and Constantine built a basilica over the site in the early 4th century. Pilgrims who came to pray there, often reciting the Lord's Prayer, hoped to draw close to that same protective presence. The image's placement on a board of religious subjects reflects how central such devotion was to the Christian pilgrimage tradition.
