This two-sheet vertical diptych, titled in the record as "Mōtōsei kōmei unri kōngō sōman dokkasei kōryō," belongs to a series drawn from the *Suikoden*, the Japanese adaptation of the Chinese novel *Water Margin* about outlaw heroes who gather at a marshland stronghold. The series, which appeared in the late 1820s in Edo, is associated with the designer Utagawa Kuniyoshi, whose vigorous figures and bold compositions made these warriors popular with urban readers. Printed from woodblocks in color, the pair of sheets gives the figure room to fill the whole frame, a format that was especially suited to dramatic poses.
