Seated with one arm bared, the central figure has his bone worked on by a physician while a board game sits nearby. The subjects point to the Chinese story of the general Guan Yu, who, according to the tale, was wounded by a poisoned arrow and had the poison scraped from his bone while he calmly played a game of go. Japanese artists returned to this episode often, and here the surgery and the game together make the composure of the moment the real subject. Printed in 1853 as a vertical triptych, the three sheets let the figures and the physician's tools spread across the full width of the design.
