This triptych is set apart by its three-sheet vertical format, which spreads a single scene across the full width of the composition. Its Japanese title refers to treating a burn and to scraping bone, and the subject tags add nobility, rulers, physicians, surgery, and board games, so the scene appears to pair a medical procedure with a court or elite setting. Dated 1853, it was printed in the final years before the Edo period ended, when Japan was facing mounting pressure from foreign powers. Color woodblock prints of this kind were produced in quantity for a wide urban audience, and a scene that combines medicine and leisure among the elite offers a glimpse of how such activities were pictured at the time.
