Rather than the usual street scenes, this three-sheet woodcut focuses on Americans and their clothing, set against the bustle of city life in the early 1860s. Published in 1861 by Yamajin (Yamashiroya Jinbei) and signed Hiroshige, it belongs to a series called *Images of the Western World*. Japan had opened its ports to foreign trade only a few years earlier, and print artists eagerly recorded the newcomers' dress and manners, so this sheet offers a lively record of how Japanese viewers saw foreign residents at that moment.
