This three-sheet triptych shows Americans in Western dress going about town life, a subject the record directly names. Issued in the ninth month of 1861 by the publisher Yamashiroya Jinbei, it is signed Hiroshige, the name taken by Utagawa Hiroshige II after the death of Hiroshige I in 1858. It belongs to a series called *Images of the Western World*, made in the years after Japan opened its ports to foreigners, when treaty settlements such as Yokohama drew curious crowds. Printmakers eagerly recorded these visitors and their unfamiliar clothing, often with a mix of fascination and caricature.
