Three sheets joined into one vertical composition, this 1855 triptych is a Genji-e, a print drawing on *The Tale of Genji*, the early eleventh-century court romance by Murasaki Shikibu that Edo-period artists returned to again and again. Its title ends with the word for dawn, which matches the sunrise theme noted in the record, along with women's dress and relations between the sexes. Mid-nineteenth-century color woodblock prints like this were a commercial trade, made for townspeople who knew the novel well enough to recognize its scenes. The layered robes and patterned textiles show how carefully the carver and printer built up each color block.
