Few mines were promoted to travelers as boldly as Wieliczka, the salt works near Kraków, in this 1938 color lithograph. Henryk Uziembło designed the poster, and the Warsaw firm of B. Wiersbicki i S-ka printed it, a pairing typical of the commercial art produced in interwar Poland. Salt has been mined at Wieliczka since the medieval period, and by the 1930s its underground chambers, including the chapel carved from rock salt, were among the country's best-known sights. Notice how the bright inks turn a working industrial site into an inviting destination.
