Gdynia was a small fishing village on the Baltic coast when Poland, reborn as an independent state after 1918, set out to build a seaport of its own, and this chromolithographed poster presents the new harbor as a national achievement. Printed in Bydgoszcz and issued under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Communications, it carries captions in Polish, English, French, and German, signaling that it was aimed at foreign travelers and shippers as well as domestic viewers. Its promotional purpose was to present Poland as a sea-facing nation, a message that mattered because the country had limited coastline before Gdynia's development in the 1920s.
